Whilst most of us would have heard the phrase ‘We Are What We Eat’ it is only recently that I have started to understand what this really means, and that our food choices play a critical role in shaping our physical, mental and general well–being.
Physical: The foods we consume provide the essential nutrients our bodies need to function properly. Proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals all play distinct roles in maintaining our health.
Proteins are crucial for building and repairing tissues, muscles, skin, and other vital parts of our bodies. Carbohydrates are the primary source of energy, fuelling our daily activities and brain functions. Fats support cell growth, protect our organs, and help our bodies absorb vital nutrients. Vitamins and minerals are essential for various biochemical processes, from bone health to immune function.
Mental: Our brain, the control centre of our body, relies heavily on the nutrients we ingest. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish, nuts, and seeds, are vital for cognitive function and brain health. Antioxidants, present in fruits and vegetables, protect brain cells from damage and support mental clarity.
