Recently, ‘M’ who worked with me a few years back, in the very early days of Jerk Station, stopped over at our Chelmsford High Street stall for a quick hello, as he does whenever he is in town.

As we were catching up, I asked him how he was doing. The smile on his face widened and he said ‘I AM ENJOYING LIFE at the moment!’ I was thrilled to hear that, and intrigued at his comment. What is more, he was exuding joy, peace, contentment, and you could feel, and tell, that he was in a ‘good place’ and he certainly was enjoying life. He was with his ten years old son T who was much younger when his dad used to work with me. They excitedly talked about their planned 2 day staycation to one of the local holiday resorts and as the customer queue began to grow, we had to round up.

But I was still puzzled, and desperately needed to find out how come he is ENJOYING LIFE in the midst of the ‘cost of living crisis’ etc. Appearances can be deceptive, but he was not wearing any designer clothes, was not driving any fancy car, was not living in a large luxury home in a ‘nice neighbourhood’ and I doubt that he had a pile of cash in the bank, nor an unlimited Credit/expense card, yet, you could feel he was actually, really enjoying his life.

So, I started, ‘’really happy for you man, I have known you over the years and I can tell that you are definitely in a good place. What is the secret, what is going on?’’ He smiled widely again, looked furtively over his shoulders, stepped towards me, lowered his voice, and said, ‘I PRAY EVERY MORNING’ Austine.

My eyes popped in shock. He carried on, ‘’I wake up, thank God for what I have, and then go out and enjoy my life’’ He stepped back with a gleam in his eyes, as we did a high 5 and they walked away cheerily saying goodbye. WOW!! I thought.

As a Christian, I was ecstatic that M found his peace and happiness through his relationship with God. However, in my view, it goes beyond that. It really stems from a position of gratitude and appreciation for what we already have, whilst also doing the best we can do. It is possible for all of us, regardless of our religious belief or not.

There are Christians who pray every day, sometimes for hours, yet go out and worry about what they don’t have, instead of going out to ‘enjoy their life’

Over the summer months, in addition to our regular Friday and Saturday slots  at Chelmsford High Street market, we also hit the road and may be coming to a festival or event near you!

Below is a line-up of confirmed appearances with our Jerk Station Mobile Foodstation:

I AM ENJOYING LIFE - continued/

The fact, however, is that there are people who have all the material things but are totally unhappy, and miserable. Personally, whenever I look around me, I find many things to be grateful. In life, there will always be ‘something’ missing, so why not focus on what you already have rather than worrying about what you don’t have.

Apparently only 8% of what we worry about are legitimate. (30% are things in the past that you can’t do anything about, 40% are things that will never happen, 12% are unnecessary worry about our health, and 10% are miscellaneous worries, often about other people) Of the things that actually happen, half of them you can do something about, the other half you have absolutely no control over.

So quit worrying and start enjoying your life!

WORRYING IS LIKE SITTING ON A ROCKING CHAIR. IT GIVES YOU SOMETHING TO DO , BUT GETS YOU NOWHERE.
