All over the world, mothering Sunday is dedicated to celebrate the selflessness, care, unconditional love and nurturing spirit of mothers.

In the UK it has its roots in medieval England when it was a day for people to return to the ‘mother church’ (the main church in their area) for a special service. It falls on the 4th Sunday of Lent, right in the middle of this fasting and abstinence period, thus providing a break to enjoy a special meal together.

Over time, it has evolved into a day to honour and show gratitude to mothers (and maternal figures). Whilst there are flowers, cards and gift giving, however, sharing sumptuous, delicious meals with loved ones is usually at the heart of it all. Some would opt to go out for a meal, some others would prefer a hearty home cooked meal.

Regardless of what works best, it is the getting together, the thoughtfulness, and the appreciation that truly matters.

Whatever happens, let us take a moment to honour the incredible women who play a maternal role in our lives.
