Black History Month (BHM) in the United Kingdom is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse contributions of Black individuals and communities throughout history. It is a month dedicated to recognizing the struggles, achievements, and resilience of Black People in the UK, even as we acknowledge ongoing fight for equality and justice.

ORIGINS:

BHM has its roots in the United States, starting in the 1970s. However, it was officially recognized in the UK, in 1987 thanks to the concerted efforts of Ghanaian Journalist and Pan African Activist Akyaaba Addai-Sebo. Having been deeply motivated by his observation of a prevailing identity crisis faced by young black children in the mid 80s, he decided to make a change. He worked towards identifying and celebrating the achievements and contributions of Black people who had often been marginalized and underrepresented in British History and society.

Today, Black History Month (October) has become a focal point for organisations, businesses, schools and society at large to educate the public about the history and culture of Black communities, shedding light on their struggles, triumphs and contributions to society.

Whilst there are several events aimed at celebrating Black role models, arts, food and cultural heritage, many also use the opportunity to encourage representation and diversity in various facets of society, thus fostering a sense of solidarity and unity among ethnic and racial groups.

As we live in an increasingly multi-cultural society, Black History Month remains a catalyst for positive change.

Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month. It has received official recognition from governments in the United States and Canada, and more recently has been observed in Ireland and the United Kingdom.
