RAISED EYEBROW MOMENT !

June, 2024

At about 3.30 pm on Friday, as a lady who had been waiting patiently to be served at our High Street stall approached, I thanked her for her patience. She waved it off, smiled and began haltingly…

‘I am probably one of those really annoying customers…’

‘Oh no’, I countered, ‘it takes a lot to annoy us, but you can try, ha ha =)!’

She went on. ‘You see, I am gluten and dairy intolerant, is there anything I can eat from your menu, what do you recommend?’

After a few more questions, we agreed on rice and peas, plantains, some oxtail, and a piece of jerk chicken. She rubbed her hands together gleefully as we packed her order. She then told me that she had only recently been ‘diagnosed’ and was ‘trying to watch’ what she ate. She informed me that she had already been to ‘5 or 6 other food places’ in the indoor and High street markets and that we were the only ones that had something she could eat. In fact, she said, we were going to be her last point before going home hungry!

I was genuinely surprised, but couldn’t really comment on the accuracy of her observation. I just assumed ‘everybody’ was offering gluten free and dairy free options, but I am probably too caught up in navel-gazing to know what is actually going on around us.

WHAT IS YOUR EXPERIENCE?

If you or your friends and family have a special dietary need, how easy is it for you to get the right food when you go out? What do you find frustrating, and what do you find helpful.

How can small businesses like us serve you better?

I would really love to hear from YOU!
