Thank you ‘Doggy baggers’!

October, 2024

In case you did not know, it is fairly a common practice in ‘Black culture’ to take away food from parties and social events. Aunties, and daring Uncles, expect, and are expected, to ‘bring home something’ from such events. It is just a given.

However, even with my background, and my years of frontline role in this area, one catering event at the weekend was an eye popping experience. The ‘take away’ requests started way before the main meal, (one of the dignitaries was leaving early… this morphed to 5 ha ha) and carried on till after we had packed up. Indeed, we had to ‘manufacture’ yet another pack just before we drove off, because one of the key people had been forgotten.

Requests ranged from early departures, somebody in the car pack, friend running late, the ‘high table’, workers, husband ‘back home’?, staff and on and on …

Initially, I was alarmed pre main meal, became mildly amused, then fascinated, and on the way home we were having a right old belly laugh, when my young apprentice was ecstatic that we have ‘escaped from those Aunties’!!! (He gets dramatic…)

On reflection, I actually look at it as some sort of compliment. We have all been to a party, (or two) where we could not bear to eat the food. So, if people are getting creative to take our food home, then I am cool with that!

As a service provider, understanding the stated and unstated needs of your client is crucial to having a successful event. When you are hired, your client has relinquished their responsibility in that area to YOU! It is therefore vital that you understand the nature of the event, the culture and the background of the ‘customer’ and their guests. Doing this is of first importance and gives you a fighting chance of delighting everybody.
