Party Trick

For more than a decade, dating back to 2012 when I was part of the team that organised the world’s biggest party, (Olympics games in London), I have been very much involved in putting together parties of various sizes for private and corporate clients. In the process, I have found out that there is ONE key factor that would always lead to a much better, less stressful and enjoyable party, for the hosts, and of course the guests.

PURPOSE IS THE KEY:

Most people would go to great lengths, costs and inconvenience without any thought or clarity of what the purpose is! During my initial consultation with clients, I regularly get blank stares, or mild irritated looks when I ask ‘what is the purpose of the party?’ I can ‘hear’ them thinking ‘I just told you it is my 50th birthday party …, how many times do I need to say it?’

However, whilst your birthday is the reason for the party, you must go beyond that and define a purpose in order to focus, allocate resources, and manage the process to get the best results.

Let’s say it is your wedding, and your purpose is to ‘announce that you have made it’ and deserve recognition in town. Your venue, guest list, music, food, entertainment, timings, ambience, to name just a few, would be vastly different from if your purpose was to share some precious moments with close family and loved ones to appreciate your connections over the years!

Failing to give thought and get clear on your end goal, the lasting memories for you and the guests, is a recipe for stress, uncontrolled costs and burn out.

What is true for a private party, is also true for a corporate event!

FIRST THINGS FIRST:

So, as summer finally arrives and you are thinking of organising a party, get clear on what you intend to achieve, your purpose, and then build everything else around it.
